Preserving History: Buildings Demolished, Moved and Landmarked
Moving town hall 1899
There had long been dissatisfaction with the location
of the Town Hall at University and Sacramento. An
editorial in the Berkeley Gazette stated: “It is just
inside the limits of nowhere, and the officers and
citizens of Berkeley always feel that the trip to the town
hall is in reality a visit to the rural districts of the
frontier, where the wild grape has withered and died
and the emaciated jack rabbit no longer hops against
hope.” The move took a month, and the town officials
continued doing business there during that time.
