According to the articles above in the Sept. 12,
1962 Berkeley Daily Gazette, opposition to the
Berkwood School’s request for expansion
included Councilwoman Lee Breckinridge
Thomas’ objection to Berkwood teacher Betty
Halpern. She had been called to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) and declined to answer a question about
whether or not she had ever been a member of
the Communist party. Nevertheless a majority of
the City Council approved the school’s request.
