The Convent, the UC Berkeley student coop on
1601 Allston Way, houses 25 students in the former St. Joseph’s Convent. In
their online site, the Convent is advertised as the place where “studious,
cloistered nuns have long since been replaced by studious, cloistered
graduate and reentry students.” The sisters first inhabited the Convent in
1966; it had been built to replace the original Convent, built in 1877. After
the University purchased the Convent property, it leased the Convent to the
UC Berkeley student coop and was occupied by students beginning in 1992.
