Preserving History: Buildings Demolished, Moved and Landmarked
A Lucky Street Mariner
W.T. Grant, the house mover has just accomplished a difficult feat in piloting a large barn through the crowded thoroughfares of Berkeley. The large barn which was purchased by Durbin & Bleakley, the pioneer furniture dealers, and formerly located in the eastern portion of the city was successfully moved by the expert mover to its final place at the lower corner of Grove and Addison streets.
During the pilgrimage the large edifice required the constant attendance of two lineman of the Telephone Company to raise or cut wires for the building to pass under. The chief point of interest was at the corner of Shattuck Avenue and Addison Street where a turn was made in the course of procedure, and the mooted question of how to move a forty foot building around a corner where the street was only 30 feet wide confronted the engineers.
