Preserving History: Buildings Demolished, Moved and Landmarked

Berkeley Landmarks

A landmarks preservation ordinance was adopted by the City of Berkeley in 1974 to promote historic preservation. Policy 1.01 of the City of Berkeley Master Plan makes preservation a primary commitment by stating:

Identify, restore, and preserve historic buildings; protect historic structures through careful design and location of new structures….

The Historic McGee-Spaulding District now has five Berkeley landmarks, one of which, City Hall, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The other landmarks are St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church & Presentation High School, Fox Common and the Fish-Clark House. The Hunter House has been designated a structure of merit. Our group landmarked the Hunter House in 2000 and the Fish-Clark House in 2010.
