Transportation: Streetcars, Trains, Buses

1891

On May 17, the Claremont, University and Ferries Railroad (see the identifying letters on the side of the car), a narrow gauge horse car line, begins operating between the East Berkeley and West Berkeley Stations. The line runs from Center Street and Shattuck Avenue via Shattuck Avenue, Addison Street, Sacramento Street, University Avenue, and Fourth Street to Delaware Street, with a branch running to Peralta Park opening in August. This is a great improvement for people residing in the McGee and Spaulding Tracts, especially St. Joseph's day students and church-goers, over the stagecoach that used to make the trip only four times a day. Note that there is still no paving of the streets.
